  • Helpful Utilities

AppMenuBoy 1.0
AppMenuBoy (free) is a clever program that creates an icon in your Dock that displays all the applications in your Applications folder. It’s clever because it displays only the applications in that folder — not the subfolders and other files. If an application is within a subfolder, it is displayed at the top level. If a subfolder contains more than one application, the subfolder is displayed, and the applications are displayed within it. Limitations: it doesn’t display icons, and it doesn’t update if you add new applications to the Applications folder — you must relaunch AppMenuBoy to refresh its list.

Colorate 1.2
Mosquito Software’s Colorate (donationware) is a utility for creating harmonious color palettes. It can automatically generate Random, Blend, and Gradient palettes from any chosen color or — get this — from the dominant color in an image file. Once you’ve generated a palette you can save it as a .clr file that can be used in any application that supports Apple’s color picker (including Photoshop).

Folder Quick Look Generator 0.3
When you try to use Leopard’s Quick Look feature to see the contents of a folder, all you see is the folder’s icon. (To use Quick Look on any item, just press your keyboard’s space bar.) With this Quick Look plug-in, you’ll see a list of the contents of the folder, as well as detailed information about the folder itself (number of items, path to the folder, creation and modification dates), and about each item in the folder.

PTHPasteboard 4.4.0
Paul Haddad’s PTHPasteboard (free) is an automatic multiple clipboard. Its window can either appear at all times, or it can slide off the edge of your display for one-click access. You can store frequently accessed items in additional windows, search its content, see which application the item was copied from, and assign keyboard shortcuts to items. And our favorite: you can paste formatted text as unformatted by Command-clicking on any item. The $25 Pro version lets you share windows across a network and apply filters to text as you paste it.

SoundSource 2.0
SoundSource is a free utility for Mac OS X that adds an item to the menu bar that lets you instantly switch your audio input sources and output destinations. It’s handy for channeling your system alerts to your internal speaker(s) while you listen to more important sounds with your external speakers. Version 2 adds volume sliders for all sound sources in Mac OS X 10.5.

WhatSize 4.3
ID-Design’s WhatSize ($13 shareware) shows a graphical representation of the files and folders on your hard drive, organized and color-coded by size. Here’s the cool part: when you select a folder, WhatSize displays the content of that folder, and the content is also sorted and color-coded by size. Its Table View lets you filter files to display only files greater than a certain size. To delete a file, simply select it and click the Delete button in the WhatSize toolbar.

  • Adobe InDesign Plug-in

Tetris 1.2
DTP Tools’ Tetris 1.2 (free) lets you play Tetris within InDesign CS/CS2/CS3. Its “purpose” is to give your brain a break by letting you work on your high score in Tetris, without having to leave your page layout application.

  • QuarkXPress XTension

Badia LiveKeys 2.0
Light Badia LiveKeys 2.0 Light (free) is an XTension for QuarkXPress 7 that lets you customize keyboard shortcuts. You can use it to assign shortcuts to menu items that don’t have shortcuts, or change them to ones you’ll remember (or to match shortcuts in other applications). You can also assign shortcuts to Style Sheets that are easier to remember than Option-#. The full version of LiveKeys ($50) is available for QuarkXPress 4/5/6/7 and adds the ability to assign shortcuts to tools in the Tools palette, save and share sets of shortcuts, and customize or explore hidden shortcuts that you didn’t know existed.
